Waverley Communicators Is On The Move

As you know the library recently notified us that they would no longer be opening on a Thursday night with effect from the end of September. 

We have been actively seeking a suitable and affordable new location to host the club on the same night and in the same general vicinity. 

I am pleased to announce that  from 04 Oct onwards meetings will be held at:

Old Saint Paul Episcopal Church Hall, Jeffrey Street, EDINBURGH, EH1 1DH (entrance to church hall is at foot of Carrubber’s Close, near North Bridge)

FACILITIES

Space

The new venue has a large room which will give us a greater degree of variation in terms of layout options.  

Refreshments

There is also a distinct kitchen and service area, which will streamline the tea/coffee provision at breaks allowing greater socialising. 

Lavatories, Stairs, Disabled Access

There are no restrictions on the use of the toilets and less stairs to navigate.   There is also wheel-chair accessibility. 

Visual Aids

We will need to provide our own projection devices – this is something the committee will address.

From the Royal Mile or Bridges:

 Head towards the crossroads of the High Street and North Bridge by the Tron Church. Walk downhill to the entrance to Carrubbers Close, and descend the stairs to the very bottom and then the hall is on your right.

From Princes Street:

 Turn off onto Waverley Bridge, near the Scott Monument. At the mini roundabout, turn left on to Market Street. You will shortly pass under North Bridge, and Old Saint Paul’s is just after that on the right.

From Waverley Station:

Head up onto the station bridge walkway and make for the station’s Market Street exit: Turn left into Market Street. You will shortly pass under North Bridge, and Old Saint Paul’s is just after that on the right.

The following Lothian Buses services pass nearby:

1,19,22,25,34 to Waverley Steps

3,5,7,8,14,29,30,31,33,37,47,49 to North Bridge

4,10,11,12,15,16,26,44 to St Andrew Square

23,27 to Mound/George IV Bridge

35 to High Street

36 to Jeffrey Street

41,42,45,67 to Waverley Bridge

 PARKING

On-street car parking is available in Jeffrey Street and East Market Street.  

After 6.30pm it is permitted to park on single yellow lines (and permit holder spaces do not tend to be checked after this time either).

All parking is at the driver’s own risk and the club shall not be held responsible for any damage or fines incurred.

Blue badge holders may park on double yellow lines with a single kerb stripe except during peak hours.

 MEETING TIMES

Start Times – Please aim to arrive for meetings at 6.30/6.45 for a prompt 7pm start.  

Any help setting up the room will be greatly appreciated.

End Times – We would strongly encourage people to stay for around 10 minutes or so after the official 9pm meeting end time in order to discuss future speeches/roles with their mentors and to engage with committee members as necessary. 

We also need to clean up after ourselves – cleaning cups, collecting unused paper and stacking chairs – so if everyone could please volunteer for these tasks every now and again to share the load that would be great.

 AFTER CLUB SOCIAL

We will explore suitable pubs in the area and determine where best to convene after the main club event. 

We may try a few before settling on a preferred one. 

The Toastmaster of the evening will announce the choice of pub at the end of each meeting. 

Please feel free to suggest pub venues to the Toastmaster before the event or at the break.

COSTS

We relocate to this new venue at a time when the renewal fees are due. 

We would be keen as many members as possible re-join to continue their public speaking and leadership development path in this new location. 

The new location costs are broadly similar to the library costs and hence there is no need to raise member fees.
