Even though he is the 2001 International Speech Champion, a successful speaker and stand up comedian, Darren is still a paid up member of his Toastmasters club.

Here is a short video (2 mins) from Darren Lacroix about connecting and developing you  humour skills.

Darren talks about Dale Carnegie who, when was asked about the difference between a good and a great speech, said “100 speeches”.

You don’t have to wait that long. You can accelerate your speaking by entering a Toastmasters contest and there is still time to enter the club contests (Humorous Speech and Table Topics) that are taking place this Thursday.

Even if you don’t think you will win, I guarantee that taking part in a contest will take your speaking skills to a new level.

If you can have a humorous speech ready by Thursday evening or you ‘feel the fear’ of doing a Table Topic but  will ‘do it anyway’ , contact the club’s VPE Stephen Dix at stephendix@blueyonder.co.uk and sign up for the contest.

It really is not about winning but about taking part. On the other hand, you can deliver 100 speeches.

With the Humorous Speech Contest on Thursday 6th September in mind, or even if you just want to improve your humorous speaking skills, here is a short (3:58) video from the 2001 Toastmasters World Champion of  Public Speaking, Darren Lacroix.

In the video, Darren talks about his first experience of standup, how he ‘bombed’, what he learned from the experience and how he used it to become a successful speaker and comedian. It’s also very funny.

Whether you are thinking of entering the Table Topics Contest on Thursday 6th September or just want to improve your Table Topics skills, here’s what you need – a simple  ‘how to’ guide.

Lorna Slater is a past member of both Waverley Communicators and, before that, Capital Communicators. She has won both the club’s Table Topics Contest and the Humorous Speech contest.

We persuaded her to show us how she considers, constructs and delivers Table Topics with such apparent ease in the short space of 2 minutes. The secret? She has a method.

She shared this method with the club in an education session and delivered it again at Capital Communicators so that it could be recorded.

The video is in 2 parts because of the Youtube time restrictions – Part 1 is 6 minutes and Part 2 is 10 minutes.

And , if you have any feedback on the videos, on Table Topics in general, or any tips that would help members, please leave them in the Comments box.
