Letter To Toastmasters

Johanne Burns

“The practice I have gained from Table Topics helped me in a real-life situation.”

In this case, the ‘real-life situation’ was a job interview.

Waverley member, Johanne Burns, wrote this in a letter, printed in this month’s Toastmaster magazine.

Johanne’s letter went on to say that although she did not get the job, the feedback she received was very positive “especially in regard to my presentation and my responses to interview questions.”

If you want to hear what else Johanne said, read her letter, Good Impressions, in the October 2012 Toasmaster magazine.

Writing a letter for a magazine is not as easy as it looks.

Editors want letters that are well-structured, interesting, make a point and keep to time, i.e. within the specified word count – just like a Table Topic!

Well done Johanne for having the letter accepted and published.

Video: Table Topics Tips

Post written by Moira Beaton DTM, Vice President Public Relations

Whether you are thinking of entering the Table Topics Contest on Thursday 6th September or just want to improve your Table Topics skills, here’s what you need – a simple  ‘how to’ guide.

Lorna Slater is a past member of both Waverley Communicators and, before that, Capital Communicators. She has won both the club’s Table Topics Contest and the Humorous Speech contest.

We persuaded her to show us how she considers, constructs and delivers Table Topics with such apparent ease in the short space of 2 minutes. The secret? She has a method.

She shared this method with the club in an education session and delivered it again at Capital Communicators so that it could be recorded.

The video is in 2 parts because of the Youtube time restrictions – Part 1 is 6 minutes and Part 2 is 10 minutes.

And , if you have any feedback on the videos, on Table Topics in general, or any tips that would help members, please leave them in the Comments box.

Club Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest

Post written by Moira Beaton DTM, Vice President Public Relations

Humour is mankind’s greatest blessing (Mark Twain)

Thursday 6th September  – humour, fun and nail-biting suspense when the club holds its annual Humorous Speech Contest and Table Topics Contest.

ALL members are eligible to compete.

Humorous Speech Contest: a 5-7 minute humorous speech with the usual opening, body, conclusion – not a standup routine.

Table Topics Contest: 1-2 minute speech – all contestants speak on the same topic.

We also need Judges,Timers, Ballot Counters and SAA’s and of course, an audience!

To get you in the mood, make yourself some tea or coffee, have a seat for 7 minutes and watch the District 71 Humourous Speech Champion 2008 – Michael Cronin from Speak Easy Toastmasters, Mallow, County Cork, deliver his hilarious winning speech Feel The Fear And Blow It Up Anyway.

Look out for most posts on humour and a video on an easy and foolproof way to construct and deliver Table Topics.
